color blocking...

my color palette...

today i was very happy with my color blocking skills... and i even wore my shirt tucked in!  as anyone can tell right now it's all about the layers, layers, layers, especially with a great chunky sweater like this spring shelter cardigan from anthropologie.  yeah, it's orange (shall we say coral), and i would like to state for the record that i have never owned anything orange/red in my life.  but i love this sweater so much that i wear it anyways, just to be brave.  the skirt and blouse are from a million years ago but i still love them.

whoops...

someone's in big trouble *finger pointing at my own chest*... my sister just told me today how devastated she was that i haven't done a post for her yet.  wiping tears from her eyes, she lamented the fact that i haven't even mentioned her existence, let alone witter on about her amazing and abundant talents.

this...

is carrie, who some of you may know better as carrie girl.  she's a great sister, even if she doesn't like unloading the dishwasher because of her strange aversion to cutlery and she can't participate in any lemon meringue pie eating contests.  she has aspirations of being a photographer or a film maker.  her toddlers and tiaras series closely rivals her labyrinth video for classic greatness.

now on to me...

today i chose my new eb cord jacket, boyfriend jeans, and AG striped t from anthropologie.  can't wait for tomorrow, it's finally wednesday!

i would just like to say right now, thanks to all of you that have offered your kind words and encouragement about this blog.  i am inspired by all of you and aspire to be a better person because of your general awesomeness!

i love mail...

yay for me!  i finally got my replacement jacket in the mail today and i am so excited.  along with the jacket came a pair of super comfy boyfriend jeans that i got on sale... love when that happens.

aspirational outfit of the day, this outfit counts because i aspire to feel comfortable wearing socks with flats or heels like these pretty pretty girls...

ps... i'm the one in the middle.  and i know you can't even see my feet but i was wearing flats with striped socks.  i swear.

boardwalk breeze top:  kiyonna
tank top & jeggings:  addition elle
socks:  sock drawer

can't believe i almost did that...

my heart is seriously pounding right now.  i just almost purchased this beauty...
yes girls, saks almost sucked me in again!  whatever, it's only $335, i had almost convinced myself to do it.  i mean i've definitely spend that much before, granted, not on one item of clothing...  maybe a bag back in my coach loving days.  oh my gosh.  thank goodness my adobe flash player isn't updated enough for the fancy schmancy saks website.  my order was kaiboshed before i could get to the credit card part of the deal.

i came to my senses and although i am desperate to buy this gorgeous gorgeous piece of art i will abstain until the light of day.

all hail to johnny was.  biya is an amazing designer and maybe someday i'll work up the courage to fork out all that dough.

mmmm...

forget fashion, today was all about the salted caramels.  these delightful little bites were quite the hit at work, so much so that people were enjoying seconds and maybe even thirds, not to mention taking one home for a 'friend' (yeah right).  the recipe came directly from a great book called sugarbaby by gesine bullock-prado.  this book is the sugar lovers best friend, with treats to make you salivate such as cotton candy, peanut butter fudge and the next recipe on my list, the strawberry basil napoleon.  now, because i promised jenn, the recipe can be found below!

1 1/2 cups heavy cream
2 cups sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup UNSALTED butter cut into small pieces (don't use salted, you may be sorry!)
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 tsp sea salt

line an 8x8 baking pan with aluminum foil and spray with non-stick cooking spray.

heat cream, sugar and corn syrup over medium low heat until the sugar has melted, stirring occasionally.  raise the heat to medium and continue to stir until mixture begins to boil.

stop stirring!  cook the caramel until it reaches 257F (125C) on a candy thermometer.  ** read my note below**

immediately remove the pan from the heat and add the butter, vanilla and 2 tsp of the salt.  stir until incorporated and butter is melted.

pour into pan, sprinkle with the remaining salt and let sit until room temperature.

cut the caramel into small squares and wrap individually, store airtight for up to a week!

**here's my note**  check your candy thermometer before making this recipe.  apparently water boils at 212F at sea level, and i definitely do NOT live at sea level.  my first batch of caramels turned out delicious but much harder than it should have been.  so i tested to see what temp water boils at in my neck of the woods.  according to my candy thermometer, water boils at 200F so adjust your candy temps accordingly.  i took my second batch of caramels off the heat at 245F which is technically only the soft ball stage.  you can always do the water test though to see where your caramel is at without reading the temp.

and for those of you that didn't know that such a thing as candy thermometers existed... ignore this mumbo jumbo and take another caramel.

what's in your closet...

secretly, i wish i could wear shorts every day all year round.  i love shorts.  even though i live in calgary and we have maybe three months of nice weather (that's a BIG maybe) a year, i could live in shorts.  in fact, when i'm teaching dancing i wear shorts all the time and keep the calves warm with some athletic socks and my uggs.  can't wait to post those pics!  i'll label those ones "i aspire to be comfortable".

outfit today is totes additon elle and can i just mention that this little gem of a jacket has been sitting in my closet for at least a year.  i've never worn it but it's so cute!  girls, i encourage you to take a little look behind the pants you're waiting to fit into again (give it up) and sequined mini skirt you shouldn't have bought to see what might be hiding in that closet of yours...  let's see who can come up with the best surprise!

lottery days...

does anyone ever wish they could win the lottery?  probably a better question would be who doesn't?  if i won the lottery i may just indulge in this, or this or maybe even this from lafayette 148 new york.  oh the beauty of it all.

dum dada da... and finally, the outfit of the day.

jemma rouched dress a la kiyonna (shipped super fast and fits true to size charts), vanessa cardi a la anthropologie (it's in the sale room, girls and for us canadians, shipping just got sweeter!), booties a la payless (as always)

keep the faith, baby...

today was rough, not gonna lie.  sometimes it seems like no matter what you do it's never enough.  i absolutely love love love what i get to do every day and who i get to spend my time with but today for some reason i just felt a little inadequate.  i know we all feel that sometimes, today was my day.  BUT, when i got home i discovered a little gem.  my ipod has been MIA since march but she made a reappearance finally at last.  i have missed my little green glory and am happy she is home again!

outfit of the day, jean jacket (previously seen i know but i love it!) addition elle, dress thanks to george via walmart.  bracelets came from everywhere including my darling niece maia.

this outfit really was inspired by a lovely girl i know, alexandra joy.  she was wearing it at work one day and rocking the print as AJ does.  i aspire to have her passion for cooking and crafting and all things beautiful!

they love their mom...

today's outfit compliments of anthropologie (sweater), gap (rose t), addition elle (denim) and payless!!  love a good shoe.

i'm pretty sure i got this brooch as a gift at some point in my illustrious past as a dance teacher (i get all sorts of goodies at year end).  i love it though, i have a serious brooch addiction.

ok, time for a cute story.  i have the fortune to work with some amazing people, one day i was working at the cash desk and a little family of five kids came to me.  they were carrying a beautiful sweater and the oldest daughter who looked to be about 12 or 13 looked at me expectantly, brothers gathered to either side of her.

i gave her the total and she proceeded to pull out some bills from her little cloth wallet, probably about $60.  soon after followed a few piles of loonies and toonies, a handful of quarters and a whole bunch of dimes.  the boys to either side of her were bouncing excitedly so i asked where this gift was destined, and where all the change had come from.

these sweet kids were buying a birthday gift for their mom, they all had emptied out their piggy banks, and whether they had contributed ten cents or ten dollars, they were all equally thrilled to be part of a beautiful gift to their mother.  i hope she had a great day, knowing how much her kids love her, to give up their hard earned money all for her happiness.

oh i wish...

i've discovered some wonderful plus size designers recently (many thanks to thebudgetfashionista)...i am coveting this Melissa Masse dress but i would settle (um yeah right) for this beautiful look by s.oliver.  unfortunately us north americans are out of luck unless visiting europe on a lark.

and excuse me, but can you say gorgois?  this off the shoulder silk dress is an utter surprise in the plus size world, and it has pockets!  thank you jibri for creating beautiful clothes for the world to enjoy!  wait until you see the ruffle front halter.

i'm not a vegan...

this is my darling leah.  she's awesome and talented and braver than me.  but since i taught her almost everything she knows, maybe i'm brave too.  she's also vegan, which is a lifestyle that i am intrigued by.  all i really know is that there aren't enough vegan options in calgary, a fact that leah laments every time we eat out... right leah?

this outfit caused a splash...

it's not even what i intended to wear, i was actually kind of bummed because the beautiful cord jacket i ordered from eddie bauer was WAY to big to pull off.  so that went back in the mail and i am now waiting for a smaller size.  thus, this outfit was born.  it went over great with everybody, i may have even done a spin or two.  i love feeling aspirational!

warm embrace pullover and matilija tee via anthropologie
denim via addition elle
jewellery via forever 21 and my darling lee bee
boots from payless (i always pay less for my shoes, a bit of a sin, i know)

artistry...

i aspire to be an artist.  these are some of my pieces entitled 'charity never faileth'.

Monday 18 August 2014

i wore a skirt today...

my aspirational outfit... i didn't get anything on it today except for a little rub off from my belt.  boo.  jean jacket, t-shirt and belt from addition elle, maxi skirt (hitched up and belted) from bloomies NYC!

dancing for the love...

I aspire to share the same passion as this lovely girl.

shoulder pads are so au...

referential?  yes nina garcia, i think so (cue the fifi report 269).  and thanks to gaga, anything's possible.

hot pink...

my aspirational outfit for today.  too bad i got covered in screw filler and sweat thanks to holding up the scary side table.  great times.

this is an awesome blouse i ordered online from kiyonna.  it's beautiful and comfortable and my order arrived super quick.  i only wish i would have ordered it in another color.  it did wrinkle a little bit but i steamed it out in no time!

my first post ever...

as·pire
/əˈspaɪər/ [uh-spahyuh r]
verb (used without object), -pired, -pir·ing.
1. to long, aim, or seek ambitiously; be eagerly desirous, especially for something great or of high value (usually followed by to, after,  or an infinitive): to aspire after literary immortality; to aspire to be a doctor.
2. Archaic . to rise up; soar; mount; tower.

ok, so i'm longing for, aiming for and seeking for something beyond myself.  i'm a plus sized girl in a mini oriented world and i want MORE.  particularly in the fashion world.  i want more options for a 30 something that don't look like what my grandma wore at her own funeral.

THUS, my new blog!  i have recently done some serious online hunting for beautystylefashion advice and have found some great pieces.  some en route to my home, some already arrived.  and let me tell you, i am excited to dress aspirational tomorrow.  my outfit is chosen and i will give those girls at work a run for their money (pics to follow)...

oh, and i just discovered spanx.  what rock have i been living under you may ask?  i have no friggin' idea i said to myself as i spanx'd my way through traffic cams, transformers 3 (much better than 2) and a slice of pizza.

i'm going to rock their world.
